چکیده

Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) can be used in ocean exploration and lake pollution monitoring. They use acoustic media to achieve sensor communications. UWSNs are essentially different from terrestrial RF-based sensor networks due to its highly variable, long propagation delay, and mobility nature. In this paper, we first describe our experimental design of low-cost underwater sensor nodes for deployment in a shallow underwater environment. Then, we propose two UWSN Medium Access Control (MAC) enhancements that can adapt to long acoustic delay: 1) topologyware scheduling scheme to save more energy, and 2) a coordination protocol among neighbours to reduce the frame queuing delay during MAC operations. Our experimental results show the energy efficiency of our UWSN MAC protocol.

Latency-Optimized and Energy-Efficient MAC Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks: A Cross-Layer Approach

Considering the energy constraint for fixed sensor nodes and the unacceptable long propagation delay, especially for latency sensitive applications of underwater acoustic sensor networks, we propose a MAC protocol that is latency-optimized and energyefficient scheme and combines the physical layer and the MAC layer to shorten transmission delay. On physical layer, we apply convolution coding an...

Maximization of the Supportable Number of Sensors in QoS-Aware Cluster-Based Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

This paper proposes a practical low-complexity MAC (medium access control) scheme for quality of service (QoS)-aware and cluster-based underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASN), in which the provision of differentiated QoS is required. In such a network, underwater sensors (U-sensor) in a cluster are divided into several classes, each of which has a different QoS requirement. The major problem...

Effect of Underwater Ambient Noise on Quadraphase Phase-shift Keying Acoustic Sensor Network Links in Extremely Low Frequency Band

This study evaluates the impact of underwater ambient noise using seven real noise samples; Dolphin, Rain, Ferry, Sonar, Bubbles, Lightning, and Outboard Motor in three frequency ranges in extremely low frequency (ELF) band. The ELF band is the most significant bandwidth for underwater long-range communication. ELF band which is extended from 3 to 3000 Hz clearly, faces bandwidth limitation. Me...

MAC Protocols in Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks: Issues and Simulations

Underwater Acoustic Wireless Sensor Network (UAWSN) uses acoustic signals to transmit data. Acoustic signals in underwater environment have high bit error rate, long propagation delay and limited bandwidth. Another constraint in UWASN is energy. Due to these constraints, design of energy and bandwidth efficient and propagation delay aware MAC protocol is a great challenge in UWASN. Underwater s...

A Distributed CDMA Medium Access Control for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

In this paper, UW-MAC, a distributed Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol tailored for UnderWater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UW-ASNs), is proposed. It is a transmitter-based Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) scheme that incorporates a novel closed-loop distributed algorithm to set the optimal transmit power and code length. UW-MAC aims at achieving three objectives, i.e., guarantee high netwo...
